Polution in Beijing

Beijing is fighting a war against air pollution and barbecues at the same time . Authorities have destroyed more than 500 outdoor barbecues to reduce somematter .

Photos taken by state media showed workers cut metal pieces as the guardians of the city looked . A media official in the administration of Chaoyang District Beijing office said hundreds of area for grids had been seized and cut so they could not be used again in a campaign of three months.

Ma Jun , an environmental advocate , said residents had complained to the environmental agencies in the past about the smell of smoke and barbecue outdoors .

This measure will help local residents , but the bigger problem to deal with air quality priorities we have and I think one of the main priorities allocate emissions from motor vehicles ," said Ma , director of Institute of Public Health and Environment issues .

He said the focus should be on improving fuel quality and emission control of heavy-duty diesel trucks , while the participation of the surrounding towns  not just in Beijing .

Pollution of the capital often reach dangerous levels . The city government announced last month that imposed emergency measures , such as factory closures and limits when traffic levels of air pollution were particularly heavy.
